Part 1:
We talk with Erin Jordan, investigative reporter for Cedar Rapids Gazette, and Charlene Johnson Gatson, med tech in central Mississippi, and member of a farming family.
We discuss the problems that small farmers, primarily Black farmers have in obtaining any of the money set aside as a settlement from USDA to help improve their farms and to help with environmental efforts on their farms. MS number 1 for rejection of these claims, and farmers may be told that their claims will be honored, but that promise is rescinded, and they are told that the "money has run out". Some efforts are under way to help educate these farmers about claims filing.
Part 2:
Our guest is Lisa Thurau, Executive director of Strategies for Youth, and organization to educate police and communities about how to treat youthful offenders, who are very different from adult offenders. 90% of the offenses are non-violent, but police are not trained to respond appropriately. SFY provides education and trainings to police and communities about how to appropriately respond to youth.
